Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal has won two singles championships on the ATP Challenger Tour and nine singles and two doubles wins on the ITF Futures circuit. His height is 5ft 10 inches. His weight is 69kg. 

In June 2021, Nagal held the highest rating among Indian tennis players in the singles category, ranking No. 144 in the world according to the FedEx ATP rankings. 

He has also been a consistent member of the Indian national Davis Cup team since 2018. On August 24, 2020, Nagal achieved his highest singles ranking of No. 122 in the world.

Early life of Sumit Nagal 

Born in Jhajjar, Haryana, on August 16, 1997, Sumit Nagal was the son of Suresh Nagal, a school teacher, and Krishna Devi, a stay-at-home mom. At the age of eight, Nagal began playing tennis at a nearby sports club. 

As a member of the initial group of Mahesh Bhupathi’s Apollo Tyres Mission 2018 initiative, he was chosen at the age of ten to attend his training academy. 

As a participant in the program, Nagal was centered in Bangalore from 2008 to 2010. Nagal moved to Toronto to train with Coach Bobby Mahal after the program ended.

Early Career of Sumit Nagal 

Indian tennis player Nagal, partnered with Vietnamese player Lý Hoàng Nam, winning the Wimbledon boys’ doubles championship first time in 2015 and secured his maiden ITF Futures victory at the India F8 competition. Alongside Vijay Sundar Prashanth, he gained the ITF Futures Doubles championship. 

In 2016, Nagal participated in and earned Hungary F7 in the Davis Cup. He got his first ATP Challenger championship in 2017, but he also lost the Romania F2 and Sri Lanka F3 finals due to disciplinary issues. 

He won the Italy F23 and India F7, maintaining his strong form. At the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, Nagal took home the gold medal. He also won his first challenger championship at the Bengaluru Challenger.

Sumit Nagal Career Progress 

Nagal made his debut at the Asian Games in 2018, although his form was off as he lost in the US Open and Maharashtra Open first rounds. He never made it to the ITF or Challenger tournament finals.

In 2019, Nagal participated in his first grand slam, the US Open, and advanced to his second ATP challenger final. He achieved a historic first in 2020 when he emerged victorious in a Grand Slam main draw singles match. 

Nagal made his Olympic debut in 2021, however he had form issues and injuries. He became the first Indian player to win two challenger titles on European clay in 2023, winning both in a span of four years.

In 2024, he qualified to make his second appearance in the main draw of this Major after missing the first three years due to the IATA denying him the wildcard to the 2024 Australian Open for not playing in the Davis Cup.

Sumit Nagal Records & Achievements 

  • He became the sixth Indian player to win a junior Grand Slam title in 2015 when he and Vietnamese partner Lý Hoàng Nam won the Wimbledon boys’ doubles championship.
  • He made his Davis Cup debut with Spain in the World Group Playoff match in New Delhi in 2016.
  • To win his first ATP Challenger singles championship, Nagal defeated top seed Blaz Kavcic in the quarter-finals, Yuki Bhambri in the semifinals, and Jay Clarke in the 2017 Bengaluru Challenger finals.
  • He won a gold medal at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in the Men’s Singles division.
  • He finished the 2018 Junior Asian Games in second place, along with Raj Kumar and his Indian companion Amandeep Singh.
  • He defeated Roger Federer in his Grand Slam debut match at the US Open in 2019 and advanced to the Banja Luka Challenger final, his second career ATP Challenger match.
  • At the 2019 Buenos Aires Challenger, he defeated local player Facundo Bagnis to win his second challenger title, the first having been earned on Clay.
  • Sumit Nagal made history at the 2020 US Open by winning a main draw match in the singles event of a Grand Slam for the first time in seven years.
